Matt Damon - Water.org

Matt Damon came together with Gary White in 2009 to create Water.org. Famously known as an actor, Damon has a global perspective that is far reaching and focused on making a positive change to the world around him. Water.org is focused on bringing water and sanitation to all people around the world. The organisation strives to make water safe, accessible, and cost-effective for all.
“I quickly realized the world was much bigger than my hometown.” – Matt Damon
In earlier life, Damon travelled with his mother to places outside of the US and was exposed to the conditions being faced in developing countries due to poverty. During these global trips, Damon increasingly became aware of the issues faced by communities living in the global water crisis. For millions of people and communities, access to safe water can turn difficulties into possibilities — unlocking education, economic opportunity and improved health.
In 2006, Damon founded the H20 Africa Foundation aiming to raise awareness about safe water initiatives in Africa.
“You cannot solve poverty without solving water and sanitation.” – Matt Damon
Water.org offers a range of solutions that help to reduce the financial barriers between people living in poverty and access to safe water and sanitation through the use of partners to help aid financing.
Water.org has empowered over 45million people in 17 countries with access to safe water and sanitation, in turn providing hope, health and opportunities to these people. The work of Water.org is forever expanding.
Together, both Damon and White have travelled around the world to improve their smart solutions by observing and learning from communities across the globe.
“When I was in Haiti I remember having this conversation with this little girl. She was like 13. And my oldest [daughter] at the time was 13. And I asked her - now that she had access to water, because she had been spending hours every day collecting water - I asked, well, what are you going to do with all this free time? Are you going to do homework? And she looked at me disdainfully and said, 'I don't need more time to do homework. I'm the smartest in my class.' And I said, 'so what are you going to do with all this extra time you have?' She looked me right in the eyes and she said, 'I'm going to play.' And it just buckled my knees because this idea that this kid hadn't had time to play. She hadn't had time to be a 13-year-old girl. It's these incalculable kinds of impact that this can have when you bring somebody access [to water and sanitation] like that.” - Matt Damon
